Charging and Remissions Policy

November 18, 2012 in Child Welfare, Legal requirements by webadmin

The Academy Governing Body (the Academy) recognises the valuable contribution that the wide range of additional activities, including clubs, trips and residential experiences can make towards students’ all round educational experience and their personal and social development.

As a general rule any activity or material which is needed as part of normal curricular activities does not incur a cost to parents (the term parent meaning a person having parental responsibility for a student). Where required the Academy reserves the right to charge parents in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act 1996.

Child welfare

Child welfare

The welfare of all students is one of our prime concerns at Thornaby Academy. Children learn more readily and more easily when happy, so we have created an ordered and calm environment where they feel supported.

New students settle in to Thornaby Academy very easily, helped by a specialist induction programme in June. This helps them to meet the many new challenges they will find here. Help is always at hand if needed, either from other students, Learning Tutors or the Progress Leaders.

Each student has a special relationship with one Learning Tutor, cemented and strengthened by daily contact. The Learning Tutor acts as a guide and mentor, and monitors the progress of all students in the group.

Should you ever have any concerns or worries about your child’s welfare or progress at Thornaby Academy you should contact, in the first instance, the appropriate Tutor, who will be happy to meet with you.

The Progress Leader is also an appropriate contact. It is more convenient if you can telephone to arrange an appointment for such meetings.  The Assistant Principal (Learning & Support) should be contacted if you encounter any serious problems which cannot otherwise be resolved.

Tutorial includes all activities which are planned, through both the formal and informal curriculum.

To enhance the development of knowledge, attitude, behaviour and skills young, people will need to play an effective role in society. This will help them become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights.

A specialist team of teaching staff plan and deliver the citizenship programme to all students in Years 7 – 11.

At Thornaby Academy we like parents/carers to be closely involved in all aspects of the students’ progress. If your son/daughter has a difficulty, we will work with you to overcome it.

Please remember that the more accurate the information you give us about your son/daughter, and any relevant home circumstances, the greater the support we can offer. All information of whatever nature is treated in the strictest confidence.
